Nitin Rai
Master of Engineering '17

ANU has given me opportunities to work alongside research scholars who are working on some of the breakthrough technologies in the field of wireless communication.
Nitin Rai graduated from ANU with a Master of Engineering in Digital Systems and Telecommunications in December 2017.
As a child, Nitin had always been fascinated with electronics around him and how they worked. This urged him to consider engineering as a career.
Prior to joining ANU, Nitin completed his bachelor’s degree in engineering from the Indian Institute of Space, Science and Technology. When he decided to pursue his master’s degree, he considered ANU for its strong research focus and the unique systems engineering approach.
“I chose ANU for its research focus and the systems engineering approach which makes the program exclusive. It really helped me solidify and deepen my understanding in the field of Digital Systems and Telecommunications.”
Nitin believes that the smaller class sizes made it easier for him to reach out to the academics and also gave him more opportunities to interact with his fellow classmates.
Although moving to a different country can be a daunting experience, the big move from India to Australia was quite smooth for Nitin, thanks to the friendly Canberra community.
“Canberra is a pleasant city to live in and very easy to get around. I was warmly welcomed by the caring and kind community of culturally and linguistically diverse people.”
Being around people from all over the world was an amazing learning opportunity and Nitin really values this experience as one his best memories during the two years.
“I met many talented students from all over the globe. Every day was a learning experience.”
During his time at ANU, Nitin worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for the Digital Signal Processing course.
“The teaching domain was completely new to me. It has now made me better at communicating my thoughts to the academic community.”
“ANU Career Hub is a good starting point for getting internships and job opportunities. I was able to get many interviews from the assistance provided by Career Hub.”
On completing his master’s degree, Nitin decided to go back to his home country and join his previous organisation, Indian Space Research Organisation, with his newly learned skills.
Currently, Nitin works as an Application Engineer in signal processing and communication at MathWorks, India. MathWorks is a leading developer of mathematical computing software.
Nitin believes that his unique experiences at ANU gave him an advantage while searching for jobs in his home country.
“I cracked my current job interview because of my strong domain knowledge in the field of wireless communication which I received at ANU.”
“Because of ANU, I am now inclined to pursue a PhD and help scholars in the field of wireless communication.”
Nitin recommends studying a higher degree at ANU as it gives you exposure to good academics and also aims at making you a well-rounded person.
“ANU is an inspiring place to be studying at. It is a serious university academically, has good teachers, and also gives a strong emphasis on professional reading and writing skills.”
Nitin’s advice to international students commencing at ANU is to “be confident, be pro-active, and participate in events as this will help you develop new skills and find new friends.”
