“I picked ANU because it had the best world ranking at the time! I had never been overseas before and wanted to move to a relatively smaller city rather than a big city like Melbourne or Sydney, and Canberra was perfect! It was scary at first, I had never been overseas and people looked and seemed so different to what I was used to. I found everyone so welcoming, kind and helpful. It was overwhelming but once I opened up and embraced the change, it was all very simple and easy. ANU was everything that I had hoped for and more. Canberra was comfortable; it was small enough to have everything easily accessible and big enough to allow for a good student life experience without too many distractions. In my opinion, a perfect city for university study and lifestyle!”
“I stayed at Burton and Garran College for the first 2 years of my degree and it was an incredible experience. It was a great way to meet other new people like myself and explore all the opportunities like O-week activities and other College events. I moved out to the New Acton apartments close to University for the remaining years at Canberra and it was great living so close to the University and City Centre.”
“Before I knew it I was packing my bags and leaving the country for New Zealand, to start my career as a mechanical engineer with the Building Services team at Beca, an engineering and related consultancy services company that operates in the Asia-Pacific region. I am learning a lot and thoroughly enjoying my role. I have been presented with multiple opportunities and it has been an incredible experience so far! Early this year, I was taken onboard to work on the new Christchurch Hospital Development building. It was a huge project and a fantastic opportunity for me as a new graduate to see the level of detail and coordination that undertakes to deliver a project successfully at such level of quality. I have also worked on designing ventilation, thermal comfort, air conditioning, and hydraulics systems for other school buildings, university buildings and commercial spaces such as shopping malls, office spaces, sport centers etc. The number of systems that need to be in place to make a building operable and functional is incredible! It’s exciting to be part of something like this.”
“Systems engineering helped me develop my thinking process and trained me in taking an engineering approach to solving any problem. It’s only when I started working that it struck me how everything is related to Systems Engineering at some level. We work with multiple systems daily and engineering these systems to make them more efficient, productive and simpler is a challenging and exciting field to be in.”
“Making such a big move to a foreign country might seem overwhelming and difficult at the start but if we embrace the change, like everything else it becomes easier. I couldn’t name a better place to live and study in Australia other than Canberra. And ANU is just a pool of incredibly smart, helpful and awesome people. Life can only get better from here on!”
