Laika Academy is now Unbound!
What is Unbound?
Unbound (formerly called Laika Academy) is an Australian-based social enterprise providing innovative educational programs. Our focus is on immersive, overseas experiences for university students. We think that the best way to learn is to dive in and explore an issue, a country and a culture.
Overview:
Unbound delivers innovative overseas educational programs in partnership with universities. Unbound aims to educate and connect students to important global issues and to provide tangible connections between technical knowledge and its application to create positive social change.
ANU has New Colombo Plan (NCP) funding scholarships for the two-week Design for Social Change program in Thailand for eligible students. This program introduces students to design (and hence engineering) approaches such as human centred-design (HCD) and its role in community development and working on global issues. The Design for Social Change program is suitable for any student from a design or engineering program or with an interest in community development or global challenges.
This program runs during the June-July and Dec-Feb teaching breaks each year. Domestic students may be eligible for OS-HELP.
Scholarship Eligibility Requirements:
Students must first apply to Unbound to be accepted onto the program. All students are then automatically considered for an NCP scholarship. To be eligible for a scholarship students must be:
· Domestic Student (for NCP purposes)
· Enrolled in an ANU undergraduate program in at least their 2nd year of study.
· Able to incorporate the Design for Social Change program for course credit (such as a research or group project, course project to topic or special topic course).
· Be in good academic standing with ANU and CECS.
· Have not had a short-term NCP scholarship before.
How to apply:
Students apply directly to Unbound for a place on the program here. Deadlines are typically 3 months before travel. Check the Unbound website for program dates and details here.
All students will then automatically be considered for an NCP scholarship, subject to the eligibility requirements above.

The Design for Social Change program is a great way to experience humanitarian engineering, an emerging application of engineering to achieve positive social and community change and development.
