Salary package: $73,316 - $86,140 per annum (pro rata) plus 17% Superannuation

The Area

The ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) operates Australia’s largest optical observatory and has access to the world’s largest optical telescopes.

Our staff and students have made major contributions to astronomy, mapping the structure and formation of the Milky Way, discovering planets orbiting other stars, measuring dark matter both within our Galaxy and in the wider Universe, and discovering the accelerating expansion of the Universe.

The Position

Based within Advanced Instrumentation and Technology Centre (AITC) the Mechatronic and Project Engineer will lead the mechatronics engineering within the Pyxis project. The Pyxis project aims to develop ultra-high spatial resolution astronomy using separated cubesats (and eventually larger satellites for exoplanet detection), with initial work focusing on a ground-based prototype. This involves precision motion of three 7-axis robots and movable mirror mounts, combined with an array of sensors including accelerometers, a laser gyroscope, laser interferometers and multiple camera sensors.


The Person

To excel in this role you will have:

  • Graduate qualifications in Science, Engineering or relevant discipline. (Completed of completing end 2021)
  • Experience in mechatronics engineering, with low level programming (Arduino and C), mechanical and electrical design highly desirable.
  • Experience in complex instrument or aerospace systems design including; requirements development, prototyping, build/manufacture and system validation.
  • Proven ability to work flexibly, prioritise work to meet conflicting deadlines, and to quickly adapt to new environments including a demonstrated ability to use initiative, apply sound judgement and work with minimum supervision individually and within team environment.
