Professor Joan Leach
Australian National Centre for Public Awareness of Science, ANU
Professor Joan Leach (BA Hons, BSc, MA, PhD) is Director of the Australian National Centre for Public Awareness of Science at The Australian National University. She is the Chair of the National Committee for History and Philosophy of Science at the Australian Academy of Science, and former President of Australian Science Communicators.
Her research centres on public engagement with science, medicine and technology and recently authored An Ethics of Science Communication (2019) and was an editor of Global Science Communication (2020) which is the first account of the power of science communication across the world with 39 countries and regions represented by 108 authors.
Professor Leach has won numerous academic awards for her research and community engagement. While remaining transfixed by science, she advocates for better science communication that critically examines the social impacts of science, technology and biomedicine.
Dr Charles Gretton
TechLauncher Convener, ANU
Charles is a senior lecturer in AI and Automated Planning at The Australian National University. He is also the program convener for TechLauncher.
Charles’ experience spans around 20 years of cutting edge research and entrepreneurship in Australia and overseas.
Before joining the ANU, Charles founded a data analytics company that was supported by the Coca-Cola founders platform. He has also worked as a senior researcher at Data61.
