Canberra's own #SatelliteSelfie for National Science Week

Have you ever taken a selfie from space? What if you could take one from space?
Wonder no more, because during National Science Week this August everyone in the ACT will find out! A satellite will fly over Canberra and the surrounding area, including Queanbeyan, Googong, Tharwa, Yass, Murrumbateman, Sutton, Royalla, and Bungendore to capture a large image of our capital.
The University have arranged for some large letters and flags on Fellows Oval to be seen from space. Plus our Vice-Chancellor Brian Schmidt will be joining from an undisclosed location on campus, and the first person to find him in the image can win with the 'Where's Schmidtty at ANU' challenge.
Here at the College, we’re encouraging staff and students in red to wave at the satellite from around the CECS precinct.
How to get involved
To prepare for the selfie, go outside! Ensure you have your red CECS merchandise on hand (if you have a hoodie or shirt, this would be a great time to use it). Invite your friends, team, or classmates to go outside – look up and wave for the camera.
Make sure to maintain 1.5m social distancing and not gather in groups of more than 100 people.
As any good photographer will know, having multiple opportunities to take a photo is key. Three flyovers are being run to avoid clouds blocking the picture. From the three flyovers the least cloudy image will be selected, so plan to be outside for all three days to avoid missing out.
The flyover will occur three times, between 10am and 11am on:
- Monday 17 August
- Wednesday 19 August, and
- Friday 21 August.
