Orientation Week 2022

Thursday 10 February 2022

Welcome to ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science

Orientation Week or O-Week is an exciting time in the ANU calendar. It's a time when we welcome you, our new students, to the College community. Hopefully you feel inspired and ready to begin your journey ahead.

For the first time since 2020, the campus was abuzz with O-Week activities. Here a just a few of the highlights.

On Monday 14 Feb there was the commencement address where we were welcomed to Country by Ngambri-Ngunnawal Elder Paul House and heard from inspiring speakers including our Vice-Chancellor Brian Schmidt and CECS alumna Mikaela Jade.

That was followed in the afternoon by a virtual introductory session for new CECS students hosted by the Associate Dean Education, Natalie Lloyd.

Dean Nick Birbilis welcomed new CECS students both near and far via web video. And on Wednesday afternoon the newest members of the CECS community gathered for an afternoon tea and welcome on the lawns. Birbilis and recent graduate Ruth Kravis spoke about the opportunities and experiences on offer. Also there to greet the new starters were professors and representatives of several student groups including Robogals, Fifty50, ANU Rocketry, Co-Lab and ANU Solar Car Racing team along with one of their cars.

Overheard comments from students: "Wow, a professor just came up and talked to us on the grass!" and "I'm really loving Canberra so far."

We also sat down with two, highly decorated and very recent graduates invited to share experiences and offer advice for new students: Kravis and Ryan Pike.
