Taking charge: Deputy Dean announced as Fellow in electrochemistry

The Australian National University (ANU) engineer Professor Nick Birbilis has been named a Fellow of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of electrochemistry.
Professor Nick Birbilis is Deputy Dean of the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science. He is a passionate educator and advocate for diversity in STEM, who enjoys working on projects of social relevance and impact.
“It’s a great honor to be recognised by the ISE,” said Professor Birbilis.
The ISE is a peak international body for electrochemistry. The worldwide organisation aims to advance electrochemical science and technology, share knowledge, and promote international cooperation. Each year the prestigious ISE fellowship is awarded to select members who are fully active in research and have made significant scientific or technical contributions to the field of electrochemistry.
Professor Birbilis was one of only four academics, and the only Australian, to receive this honour in 2020. He joins an exclusive group of fewer than 100 ISE Fellows worldwide.
His research interests span several areas of materials science, with a specific focus on design, durability, and sustainability of engineering materials.
Professor Birbilis has more than 300 publications and numerous patents. He has been credited for the development of several corrosion resistant alloys.
He is also a Fellow of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE, USA) and The Electrochemical Society (USA). He was awarded the ATSE Batterham Medal and also named a Victorian Tall Poppy.
