Dr José Iria

Dr José Iria is a highly motivated academic and research engineer with extensive experience and knowledge in power and energy systems modelling, optimisation, and control. In these areas, he has actively participated in 21 European, Australian, and U.S. R&D projects, and consultancy activities, collaborating with several research institutions, universities, government agencies, and industries. These collaborations resulted in the transfer of knowledge and technologies to government agencies and industries, as well as in the commercialisation of technologies. He is the author of 37 papers in top-ranked and high-impact international journals (16) and conferences (21). He was also responsible for raising more than 10 million euros/dollars in R&D funds in the areas of power and energy systems.
He obtained a PhD in Sustainable Energy Systems with Cum Laude distinction from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto in 2019, and an MSc in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the same university in 2011. His PhD was funded by an MIT Portugal fellowship awarded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology to the top 0.8% of the applicants. In 2020, his PhD thesis was recognized by APREN (Portuguese Renewable Energy Association) as one of the best dissertations in renewable energy.
Currently, he is a researcher and lecturer at the Australian National University. He held engineering and research positions at INESC TEC in Portugal between 2012 and 2019 and at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the U.S. between 2017 and 2018.
Specialties: power and energy systems; electricity markets; distributed energy resources; renewable energy; modeling; optimization; control; decision-making.

Dr José Iria is interested in building new bridges between optimisation theory and power systems through the research and development of new analytical tools for the optimisation of power systems. Specifically, his research interests include the development and application of optimisation theory to the following topics:
- Electricity markets;
- Aggregators and virtual power plants;
- Integration of distributed energy resources (e.g., photovoltaic systems, energy storage systems and electric vehicles);
- Large-scale integration of renewable energy resources;
- Distribution network planning and operation;
- Impact of climate change on power systems;
- Planning and operation of smart homes;
- Autonomous electric vehicles.
Research collaborations:
Dr José Iria is open to collaborating with researchers and students on the research topics described above. ANU may support you (https://www.anu.edu.au/study/scholarships/find-a-scholarship). So don't hesitate to contact him.
Current R&D projects:
Title: ACT Distributed Energy Resources Demonstration Pilot – Project Converge
Objective: The project aims to demonstrate new distributed energy resources (DER) orchestration capabilities known as ‘Shaped Operating Envelopes’ which will allow Distribution Network Service Providers (DNSPs) to improve network congestion management, minimise network expenditure and improve DER market bidding into energy and ancillary service markets.
Total project cost: $8.4m
Title: Optimal Distributed Energy Resources Scheduling for Frequency Stability
Objective: The project aims to investigate how to optimally schedule distributed energy resources (DER) to provide low-cost frequency stability services within distribution network constraints, while respecting the motivations and primary functionality desired by DER owners.
Total project cost: $1.71m
