Elizabeth (Liz) grew up on the NSW south coast and after graduating High School in Bomaderry she began a Bachelor of Science at the University of Wollongong before completing a Bachelor of Graphic Design at the University of Canberra.

Prior to commencing engineering at the Australian National University (ANU), Liz worked for four years as a Graphic Designer for companies including KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Liz’s journey to engineering has involved a few diversions, however with the unique insight of broad learning and varied workplace and university experiences, she is delighted to have settled with her field of study.

“I had two passions growing up, art and how things work. It wasn’t even science in general, just how stuff works. That’s why I ended up doing physics in my Bachelor of Science. It was the only science I really identified with. It’s taken me a few jobs and degrees to decide engineering is for me but I think it’s a nice balance between the two, and it uses my creativity and problem solving skills,” said Liz.

Liz has chosen to live off campus in the nearby city precinct which is walking distance to campus and close to the hip and happening area that is Lonsdale Street, Braddon.

In an average week as an ANU student Liz attends classes and performs co-executive duties for ANU Fifty50, a student led organisation that promotes gender equity in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). Liz is also currently working as an intern at Intelledox Digital Transformation Centre where she is learning about service delivery through the reinvention and digitisation of the university’s business processes

“What I like most about my ANU student experience so far is the opportunities I have found to get involved in things outside of my degree. For example, I joined Fifty50 in my first year and have had some fantastic experiences being involved in mentoring and career development as well as the obvious social aspects allowing me to make some great female friends also studying in the STEM field at ANU,” said Liz.

Liz’s recommendation for students starting at ANU is to get involved, “ANU is a fantastic uni to get involved in some really cool stuff outside of just studying your degree! Also, back yourself, starting uni straight after school can be tough and choosing the right degree isn’t always simple. The great thing about the Engineering degree offered at ANU is it allows you to develop and consider your options before you commit to your major,” said Liz.
