“You meet great people, learn and work together with them. That’s how ANU taught me and changed me to become more forward thinking.”

Zhou was looking for an Australian university to pursue her postgraduate degree in computer science after completing her Bachelor degree from Beijing Language and Culture University.

“I chose to study the Master of Computing program at ANU as it is one of Australia’s leading universities. I also heard that ANU has the largest supercomputer in the Southern Hemisphere which is really attractive to me.”

Zhaolian recalled that she wasn’t sure whether her decision of living off campus was a right choice initially, but she hasn’t looked back since.

“It only takes me 15 minutes to get to ANU by bus. Living off campus gave me the chance to meet different people and deal with real life situations. It also helped me build a closer connection with the Australian community. My two years in Canberra was very memorable. I felt that I have become much more independent than before and made a lot of good friends here.”

Apart from technical skills that she gained from her degree, Zhaolian also gained professional skills such as communication skills and project management skills which made her feel more competent and confident for her future career. She appreciated the opportunity of being able to work in a rea-world project with other high achieving ANU students.

“My Techlauncher project was really interesting – My teammates and I worked closely with our client, Research Graph, an open collaborative database that contains researchers, publications and other scholarly works, to make data extraction more specific, accurate and viewable. We also planned to make the data interactive by being able to manipulate it using hand motions via a hand sensor.”

“You meet great people, learn and work together with them, and become one of them. That’s how ANU taught me and changed me to become more forward thinking. Don’t hesitate to seek help, try to build good relationship with your professors, lecturers and classmates and lastly, enjoy your student life!”

Since graduating from her degree, Zhaolian took the opportunity to travel around Australia with her mum. She has now returned to Canberra to continue her career within in the IT industry.
