Project 3: Engagement to Manage Country: Developing a digital storytelling platform to engage and promote ecological agricultural practices

Australia’s post-colonial food system has seriously degraded the environment, a result of both wilful and accidental neglect of the complex interconnections between the food system and the wider ecosystem, and the abandonment of the Indigenous Australian principles of Caring for Country. The challenge for Australia is to re-engage and empower Indigenous communities with the utility of these pre-colonial food systems and land stewardship practices in order to provide Indigenous Australian’s the opportunity to leverage their own traditional culture and knowledge for economic benefit and environmental stewardship.

To achieve this engagement, we propose constructing a digital story telling platform that visualizes the ecological land management practices. This approach allows for communication and collaboration with stakeholders in a continual, iterative process. The resulting sociocultural platform will integrate Indigenous knowledge and insights with existing models to explore the consequences of adopting different land-use practices for healing Country, and the effect of different production systems on delivering economic, social, cultural, and environmental sustainability.
