Engineering students Matt Shadwell, Jessica Evers and Shanae King have won the Innovation award at the Autonomous Ground Vehicle Competition (AGVC).
The team travelled to Deakin University, Geelong, to complete against 12 other teams from universities across Australia to build the best robotic vehicle, complete with GPS navigation unit.
“The basic aim was to build a ground- based robotic vehicle that has to navigate between GPS waypoints in a field and avoid obstacles,” explains Shadwell.
“The competition was a really good opportunity for us to get our hands on some real gear and to get a practical application of the theory.”
Although the team didn’t win a place, the judging panel awarded them the Innovation award for their use of a FPGA based sensor processing strategy.
The team were thrilled with the outcome and said it was a great way to wrap up over 6 months of hard work.
