Jeremy Smith has received $50,000 to go towards a new humanitarian engineering course at ANU.
He received the funding as part of the Office of Learning and Teaching (OLT) scheme, run by the Coalition Government, which has allocated $3.1 million and 22 grants to help Australia’s leading academics create the world’s best teaching and learning environment.
The funds will be to put towards a new blended humanitarian engineering course for the Australian engineering sector, developed in collaboration with Engineers without Borders Australia (EWB).
“It was certainly very exciting to hear we had received the grant, particularly as it was our first attempt at an OLT grant” says Jeremy.
“Engineers require specific skills and expertise in addition to traditional knowledge in humanitarian engineering when disaster relief, climate change mitigation, sustainable development and overcoming social and economic disadvantage are involved,” said Jeremy.
“This project will enhance the existing undergraduate engineering curriculum at ANU through the development of a dedicated humanitarian engineering blended course to provide a greater depth of key material and prepare students for project work.”
Minister for Education the Hon Christopher Pyne MP said the OLT programme is part of the “Government’s ongoing commitment to developing the best university teachers and supporting excellent student learning experiences.”
