Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Science graduate Molly Thomas is excited about where the future will take her.
“Next year I will be starting a two-year graduate program as a mechanical engineer with an Australian defence contractor and I am really excited about the opportunities this could present for my career,” she said.
Ms Thomas grew up in Canberra and was inspired to become and engineer in year 12. She took part in an ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science’s Girls in Engineering and Technology program GET Set, which encourage females to pursue a career in what has been a predominately male field.
“I was able to talk to engineering students about what engineering was really about,” she said.
“What attracted me to study engineering and science at ANU was I could further the science I’d learnt in high school and have a taste of all types of engineering before I had to choose a major.”
In her third year at ANU Ms Thomas was awarded a Defence Science and Technology Group Scholarship for females in engineering.
“Having this scholarship meant that I could reduce my part time work a little bit and had more time to get involved in and be a part of things like the Engineering students association,” she said.
Ms Thomas encouraged students coming to ANU and those yet to graduate to make the most of their time on campus.
“There are lots of things you can get involved in at ANU. The more you do, both inside and outside of the classroom, the more you will enjoy this experience.”
