Postgraduate students wanting to build international networks can now apply for the 2017 Westpac Future Leaders Scholarships.
The scholarships focus on technology and innovation, strengthening Australia-Asia ties and enabling social change, and are for students undertaking a Masters by coursework or research or a PhD. They are valued at up to $120,000 over 2 to 3 years.
Tessa Henwood-Mitchell was one of two ANU recipients of the inaugural scholarship in 2015 and has used it to study a Masters in Applied Anthropology and Participatory Development.
“The Westpac Future Leaders Scholarship has already contributed exponentially to my development as a leader, and given me the opportunity to pursue study that I love and the ability to contribute to social change in a more meaningful and tangible way,” she said.
“Living in Bolivia I was not in the financial position to afford post graduate study, nor would I have been able to attend the International Development conference in Portugal in July.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to undertake a two month research trip to Asia to investigate the situation of young people leaving care, with the intention to expand the work in this field that I currently do in Bolivia.”
Ms Henwood-Mitchell said the scholarship was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
“The scholarship allows you to grow and develop as a leader, a scholar and a professional, increasing your positive impact in your field,” she said.
In addition to academic excellence, the selection criteria include the desire and potential to become leaders, inspire others and build collaborative networks across disciplines, and have a vision to contribute to the growth and prosperity of Australia.
