ANU engineering Masters student Jiaai (Mendy) Liang has been awarded two Excellent Oral Presentation Certificates at the recent 2017 2nd International Conference on Composite Materials and Material Engineering (ICCMME2017) Conference held in Chengdu, China.
Mendy’s winning presentations showcased research she has been undertaking on increasing the fuel efficiency of cars. Currently, the fuel efficiency in the automotive industry is low because of the low percentage of passenger weight comparing to the total weight of the car.
Through studying and testing a lighter material, a thermoplastic material, Mendy gains an understanding of its failure mechanism and formability, to see if it can become a viable material in the construction of cars.
Mendy believes the award is recognition of the work of the computational mechanics research area at ANU.
“As this is my first time attending a conference, I feel very honoured and surprised to receive this award.
“I want to thank the conference organises and judges, it is really an acknowledgement of our work. I also want to thank my supervisor, Dr Shankar Kalyanasundaram, because he helped me with my slides and gave valuable advice on my presentation.”
Jiaai’s two papers will be published in the conference proceeding of American Institute of Physics.
