With research expertise in biomaterials, the ANU Research School of Electrical, Energy and Materials Engineering sponsored the 25th Annual Conference of the Australasian Society for Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering (ASBTE) held in Canberra from the 18-20 April 2017.

The ASBTE provides a national focus for professionals who have interests in research, education, development and regulation of biomaterials, tissue engineering and medical devices.

Dr David Nisbet, an Associate Professor within the biomaterials research area at ANU was a conference convenor, assisting to organise the conference for over dozens of delegates from across the world.

The conference was attended by a variety of researchers, industry professionals and key stakeholders keen to update their knowledge and networks within the biomaterials field.

It provided a unique opportunity for attendees to share results, set-up collaborations and publish in internationally recognised journals to advance our understanding of biomaterials surfaces for human health outcomes.

A ‘Rapid Fire’ session was held as part of the conference, with poster authors having 90 seconds to present one slide, giving a brief overview or teaser of their poster content.

Recently graduated ANU PhD recipient Francesca Maclean was awarded Best Rapid Fire Presentation for her presentation on: In vitro and in vivo assessment of self-assembled peptide/polysaccharide hydrogels for brain repair after injury.

As Francesca’s supervisor, Dr Nisbet was not surprised with the result.

“It was not surprising to me at all that Francesca won the Rapid Fire prize that was assessed based both on her talk and poster. In fact, beforehand I was joking with her that we should only accept a win. Francesca is a great PhD student and the lab is very proud of her achievements.”
